Cuidar se escribe en femenino: Redes de cuidado en hogares de madres migrantes

Abstract

In the current context of female migration, addressing the social organization of care and the adjustments in family dynamics, allows us to problematize the validity of the conventional motherhood model, focusing on the responsibility of childcare exclusively in charge of the biological mother. Model on which family dynamics and maternal-filial relations in our society are valued and understood, as is the case of transnational motherhood. This text considers the strategies that migrant mothers employ to manage their remaining at home children care, paying attention to the dynamics confronting the conventional mother model, focused on a single woman. For this purpose, it is used qualitative information compiled over the years 2009-2012 with Guatemalan mothers living in Madrid. Among the findings, it is evident that the families of these women form a structure, based on an intergenerational solidarity, which collectivizes care, where the biological mother is a key piece that counts on the active collaboration of other women of the family group.
