Abstract

Literature describes the difficulty in differentiating the self from the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. However, there is less research that contributes to the understanding of how this diffuse differentiation between the self and the diagnosis is consolidated in the narrative of these people. The general objective of the research is to interpret the narratives that account for the process of differentiation between the self and the diagnosis in the biography of adults with bipolar disorder from the region of La Araucanía. However, this article specifically focuses on the analysis of the relationship between the social structure and this process, as part of the global analysis of results. The qualitative-interpretive methodology focuses on Rosenthal's biographical narrative approach, with a descriptive design. Eight participants were selected through theoretical sampling. The biographical narrative interview is used as a data collection technique.The results suggest that emerging adulthood culturally does not prepare the conditions for the optimal development of the self, which affects the integration of the diagnosis into the narrative. Narratives with biographical relevance are constituted as part of identity, and these are related to family and context.
