This qualitative research analyzes the interpersonal experiences of women working in contexts associated with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the region of Antofagasta, Chile, and the processes of professional agency that impacts on their experiences. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 professional women belonging to a mentoring program for university students in STEM careers. The autobiographical milestones associated with their professional trajectories were investigated and a content analysis was carried out. Participants reported experiences such as questioning of their abilities; intellectual theft; gender-based violence; and sexual harassment. As favorable experiences, they mentioned technical or socioemotional support and recognition of professional competencies. The interviewees demonstrated professional agency in these scenarios, which has allowed them to remain in and cope with highly masculinized environments, such as setting limits, persevering around goals, validating their knowledge and challenging prejudices. The implications of these results are discussed in order to make visible the inequalities that persist for women in highly masculinized STEM work environments, and to reflect on how to strengthen agency and also generate more inclusive professional environments.Downloads
