In this article we address some contextual uses of the ‘negros’ and ‘negras’ categories with the purpose of analyzing the production of youth identities in a group of youngsters from the popular sectors. The research was carried out in a public school in the city of Córdoba, Argentina. We made observations of school events, interviews with teachers and preceptors, and discussion groups with students. After a preliminary analysis of the information surveyed, we held a meeting with teachers and workshops with students in which we presented some axes analyzed. The results suggest that, around the analyzed categories, there are social, symbolic and moral differences and hierarchies between girls and boys who are in a close position in the social structure. Behavior and corporality are interpreted from normative schemes of gender and class racialization. The diversity of strategies of identity construction is discussed as well as the need to think of hybrid and complex forms or ‘reproduction’ and ‘resistance’ at situated social spaces, where different social categories intersect.Downloads
