This research focuses on detecting the presence of transactional and transformational leadership activity in Human Resource Trainers’ critical incidents and compares internal and external trainers in this arena. We chose critical incident interview as the data collection technique because it offers the possibility to obtain direct testimony about the trainers’ concrete practices. Results show that critical incidents linked transactional and transformational activity. The most recurrent transactional dimension was Active Management by Exception and the most recurrent transformational dimension was Individual Consideration. The research contributed with empirical evidence about the simultaneity of both types of leadership behaviour in each individual Trainer, with major Transactional incidents being more frequent in the case of External Trainers and major Transformational incidents being more frequent in the case of Internal Trainers.Published
