Identities in transition: Press, activism and sexual dissidence in Chile, 1990-2010

Since the beginning, Chilean transition to democracy created new scenarios and public spaces for political debates on sexual diversity and identities. Between 1990 and 2010 the political context diversified the already complex scenario among LGBT organization, raising new debates and struggles regarding issues such as the law that prohibited the legal punishment of sodomy, the anti-discrimination law and the public policies towards HIV. These issues were analyzed from the frameworks of the queer studies and recent history, by dealing with discourses, practices and identities emerged in the written media and alternative publications. These categories were confronted with the political and historical context, revealing the diverse forms of LGBT movements, identities and politics. The results showed a complex arena of political struggle among LGBT organizations, where different stereotypes were put on display, along with radical forms of expressions and identities such us the ones portrayed in Lambda News.Downloads
