This paper analyzes the last 80 years of the evolution of Chile's school leadership from an institutional perspective. The material considered is conformed by the different norms that have governed public education in Chile. This documentary research is divided into four periods of Chile's educational history: 1929-1949, 1949-1978, 1978-1991, and 1991-2009. We explore the history and evolution of school leadership. Wediscuss and draw conclusions, among other aspects, on the identity and prestige that school leadership has had, the training received by school leaders, the roles, functions and attributions assigned to them. All of these are key elements for enhancing the current discussion on this key dimension for improving education in Chile.Published
